A solarium must serve many uses apart from drying horses when they are sweating or have just been washed down after exercising. The most important thing of a solarium is its proven beneficial effects for the horse’s general wellbeing:
- It has a relaxing effect and helps “loosen” all muscles and tendons.
- It effectively helps in many therapies for a very wide range of physical problems or pains.
- Horses can be washed down after work even in cold weather.
- It contributes to eliminate any excess of lactic acid and metabolic waste.
- It improves horses’ flexibility and general fitness.
- It reduces the development of bacteria and thus the risk of infection (coughing, influenza...).
- It improves blood flow and is extraordinarily useful for back problems and for animals that suffer constant pains.
- It is also beneficial for stallions’ fertility and the quality of mares’ ovulation.
Most solariums consist of a series of compact metal or plastic panels, where the lamps and fans are built-in. These housings —sometimes only one, though often more to cover the whole horse— form a solid and impressive surface just above the animals that frightens and stresses them.
