X-FENCE Wire Mesh

X-FENCE Wire Mesh

Mark Todd mostrándonos la valla X-FENCE In some countries, it is very common to use wire mesh to fence in horses. Its use is quite widespread in England, Australia, New Zealand and, especially, in the United States.

Wire mesh mainly protects the horse from intruders: troublesome animals such as dogs, which can spark off a stampede, or other more harmful ones, like wolves or foxes that attack newborn foals, or wild boars which damage the soil and may cause accidents. It also separates horses from the outside, so they cannot bite or kick anybody. Mesh is therefore very useful to fence the perimeter of any field.

Not all wire nettings are suitable for horses though; some are capable of being very dangerous. The reason for this is that when horses graze or eat from the floor they have to stretch one of their forelegs forward to keep their balance and reach the ground properly. If the space between the netting’s wires is too big, the horse may introduce one of its forelegs in the hole when “stretching”. Then, when the horse moves, the hoof or the horseshoe may get caught, very probably causing the animal to pull back violently trying to free itself. The ensuing injuries can be very serious; there have been cases where the horse has even torn the whole hoof off. This is obviously a potential risk which must be avoided.

Another important factor is the way in which the mesh is manufactured. You must avoid installing wire nettings whose knots present cutting edges that might rip the horses’ thin skin, causing injuries which may get infected and/or result ugly. In any case, to avoid unnecessary risks and improve the mesh’s durability, we recommend you to give it an additional protection by installing one or more lines of electric twine or rope.

LUPA distributes X-FENCE wire mesh, specifically designed for horses and manufactured in New Zealand. It is recommended by renowned professional riderMark Todd and meets all the necessary requirements for its use with horses:

  • Manufactured with a de 2,5 mm. XLIFE high traction wire with a zinc and aluminium coating, it is 30% more long-lasting than normal wires and 80% less pollutant..
  • It has special non-slipping knots with no cutting edges on the inside
  • Standard mesh with 12 wires, 152 cm. high and 7.5 cm. between wires.
  • The rolls are 50 metres long and allow for posts each 5 m. (or more if they are installed by a professional). Rolls are fixed together by means of “gripples” (wire joiners and tensioners) which do not need tensioning wires, making it cheaper, quicker and easier to install.

If you were looking for a wire-mesh-fencing, X-FENCE is your product. We have stocks of mesh available, posts of treated wood and specialized personnel for its correct installation. Ask for an estimate without obligation.
