Fencing Solutions

There are many ways of fencing fields, indoor riding schools and all types of arenas. It is essential to know the pros and cons of all of them, specially their installation and maintenance costs, weather resistance, safety in case of accident, appeal… Your final choice will depend on all of these factors.

Yegua y potro asomándose sobre un vallado en maderaThere are two main aspects to bear in mind when choosing a fence: suitability and cost. The ideal fence for horses must be safe for the animals in case of accident, strong enough for them and long-lasting. Its cost will depend on several factors: whether the chosen fencing materials are easy to obtain from nearby, their actual price and the installation costs and, above all, the fence’s maintenance costs.

Usually, the ideal height of your fence will be: 120 cm. for riding arenas; 140-150 cm. for fields; 150 cm. for horse-walkers, round pens and free-jumping arenas. In general, two horizontal rails between posts will be enough for fully-grown horses, while you will need three rails for ponies and very young horses.

Despite being quite common, we strongly advise against using wire mesh fencing, metal fences or precast concrete railings, for safety reasons.

Wire mesh or netting is a frequent and repeated cause of irreversible wounds among horses.

Metal-tube fencing, so common in our studs and riding schools, is a very rigid material which does not absorb impacts. Moreover, its installation and maintenance are costly for it requires constant upkeep and re-painting.

Precast concrete is fragile until it is installed, it requires “foundations”, is rigid, and will be damaged by weather changes after some time.

It would take us too long to explain here all the fencing solutions and possible combinations available, but we can propose several systems commercialized by LUPA after many years of comparisons and experience. All the fencing systems presented are sold by LUPA and, if you wish, we can take care of their transport and installation, both of which will be underlined in your estimate. Preparing the estimate does not, of course, indicate any obligation whatsoever on the customer’s part.

Wood fences

Wood fences treated for outdoor use are by far the most popular form of fencing. They are practical, cheap to install, long-lasting, maintenance free, visually appealing, and ideal for horses.

Tablones y listones de madera listos para tratar en autoclaveTimber that has been pressure-treated both internally and externally has a lifespan of around 20 years and can be found in various finishes and presentations. LUPA supplies, transports and installs, if necessary, different types of wood fences whose timber has been treated with mineral salts, which may give them a greenish or brown external appearance. If used to fence paddocks or fields where horses are free, it is advisable to protect them by means of an electric fencing.

Wood fences are fast and easy to install. They are the ideal support for other fencing systems such as wire mesh or electric fencing. They usually require no foundations and are maintenance-free and resistant to the elements, parasites, humidity, manure, etc. Moreover, if an accident should occur, the fence will absorb part of the impact and can break without injuring the horse, being easy and cheap to repair.

The wood of pine and fir trees is of widespread use because its structure is especially liable to being treated. It should be noted that in areas of extreme humidity changes (such as the centre of Spain), both these timbers tend to split and crack to a greater or lesser extent. This natural process does not affect durability but can be unattractive. Such phenomena will also occur in machine-rounded posts.

LUPAsupplies all kinds of posts and railings for equestrian facilities. Posts and rails may be ordered in different measures and cross sections, depending on the customer’s needs. For horse fences, the most common models are the following:

Wood fences: Post & Rail fences

The traditional English fencing for horses: attractive rectangular posts and rails. The vertical posts measure 200 x 12 x 8 cm, while the horizontal rails measure 250 x 12 x 4 cm. The fixing system uses wood screws which spiral into the timber, causing little damage and preventing the rails from eventually falling.

To complete this fencing we offer English-style gates of different sizes. If a larger access width is required, they can be installed as double doors. Appropriate support posts, hinge kits and galvanised closing mechanisms are also supplied.

You can find rectangular posts and rails for fencing in the store section of our website, as well as the screws, hinges and gates

Wood fences: Texan fences

Texan fences are the most popular form of fencing in livestock facilities. They are built with naturally grown round posts, non-homogeneous and with a different diameter at either end.

To use these fences for horses we recommend 2-metre-long vertical posts (8/10 cm in diameter) with 2.5-metre-long rails (6/8 cm in diameter). The posts can simply be stuck in the ground or can be surrounded by concrete. The rails are fixed to the posts by means of galvanized Texan clamps which are screwed into place and provide a solid finish to the fence.

They can be bought by the unit to repair existing fences, protect trees, install electric fencing or wire mesh, build cross-country obstacles, etc.

We offer several gate models for fences. The most commonly used model for Texan fences is the Texan field gate, a metal-core gate clad in treated wood. It includes a support post, to be fixed with concrete, and a simple closing system. If a larger access width is required, these gates can be installed as double doors, with a central removable post.

Wood fences: Diagonal Fences

Diagonal fences are built with 1.5-metre-high machined vertical posts (12 cm in diameter) and 2.5-metre-long machined horizontal and diagonal rails (10 cm in diameter). The top of the posts end in a half-moon shape on which the horizontal rails are fixed with wood screws.
